Remember when you were in school and everyone wanted to be a part of the “in” or “cool” crowd? You know… that group of kids who were more popular than everybody else (and you and your friends would do almost anything to be a part of them)?

That’s what you want to do with your business – make it so appealing that everyone wants to be a part of it. And what better way to invite them in than through a membership site?

An exclusive, rights protected site available only to members – both new and repeat customers who know firsthand, trust and depend on your business to provide quality, top-of-the-line information and/or services.

There’s a fine line between being so cool that people want to be a part of what you’re doing, and being too cool that you turn people off. Just like that group in high school, you want to be the best of the best. But unlike those” too cool for school” teenagers, you want to be approachable and inviting.

When creating your membership site, be sure to use language that speaks to your target market. You want to entice and welcome them as members and of course, offer attractive, value-added offers.

Remember, the goal is to gain more customers and upsell those you already have. Make your membership offers special and continue to follow through, delivering on your promises each and every time. If you do, you won’t just be “cool”, you’ll be successful.

In my case, with my own first membership site (I’ve built and managed them for clients before), I’m offering free memberships on what will eventually be a subscription based model. However, this first go round is intended to add social proof to what I offer. Having social proof is of the utmost importance. If you can’t prove what you say you can and will do for your members, well… good luck with that. It won’t work.

Prove what you can do for your members and you won’t have difficulty selling it to others.
