I stumbled on this video and wanted to share it with you. It really drives home the point of how important social media is, particularly for your online success.
It got me thinking…
There are as many social media sites as there are different ways to promote your business through them. They all have unique benefits and opportunities that you should consider. But fortunately, there are several commonalities to all of them, especially when it comes to social media marketing success.
Let’s take a quick look at these similarities:
1) You can build strong profiles.
Each social media site provides an opportunity for you to describe who you are, what you do and where to find more information about your product and/or services. Your profile is often the thing that will cause a reader to take a second look at you and/or your business. Be professional while showing personality. Provide a link to your website. Correct any spelling, capitalization or grammatical errors.
2) You can engage your audience.
Social media is just that – social. Don’t be a wallflower. Engage, praise, compliment, promote fellow members, thank and be social. If you want to get noticed, you need to participate.
3) You can increase your visibility.
Social media provides multiple opportunities to promote your products/services. Social media participants expect to learn about you and your business but they will be turned off by repeated sales pitches.
Social media demands avoiding sleazy marketer tricks.
Add valuable content (tips, articles, how to’s), promote interesting content by your friends/followers, show your human side (your interests, hobbies etc) AND sprinkle in your own products/services. When done in moderation, your followers will be eager to find out more and to make a purchase.
I’d like to help you with your social media efforts through my blog (and my products and services). If you have questions, or you’re stuck on something, let me know. Simply leave your comment below or via Twitter or become a member of my Facebook Fan page
How are you doing with your social media strategy? I just recently started my own but I’ve been implementing them successfully for clients for a couple of years now. Ask me any question below. I don’t charge anything for answers on my blog!

The biggest problem i see with these social media sites right now is the “competition” you get on them. There is so many information flowing through them that i have a hard time wondering how people still find them useful. Me, as an end user, feel overwhelmed by everything that’s happening over there.

Hi Alex,
I completely understand your feelings of overwhelm in social media. I think most people feel that way. The hardest part is finding that “sweet spot” where you can effectively communicate with your target audience. Don’t give up on it… the effort will have a pay off.
Social media management is definitely something that requires some knowledge, experience and strategy. So many businesses get on a social media site because they think they “have to” and then don’t use their time on it wisely. And how awful to see a social media account that has been inactive since just about the same time it was started! I’ve told clients before, “listen, it’s better not to have an account at all if you’re not going to post anything on it!” I enjoy trying to help businesses see the value in social media marketing, it’s so similar to traditional networking, just on the web! Thanks for your post Deb! Love your domain!

Hi Nicole,
It’s true that knowledge, experience and strategy are needed but there’s no better way to get those things than by seeking guidance from those that came before you and offer a blueprint to success!
Establishing an account is a good idea even if it’s just to secure your name or chosen identity at first. Then start reading and learning so that you can begin making your presence known and becoming visible.
You don’t need a huge following to connect with your market. You just have to implement the right strategies to heighten conversion.
Hi Deb,
That’s a great video! It’s amazing what happens on social media in 24 hours, isn’t it!? I agree that you should set up your social media accounts even if you’re not ready to get going with them.

Deb,
I think you hit the nail on the head and that it is called “Social Media”, inner acting with others and sprinkling in your promotion into aluable content and
promoting others is the way to go. Otherwise it is just a new form of spam.

Oh so true, Sheila! You certainly don’t want to spam people and overdoing promotional messages is a very thin line between marketing and spamming! Less is way more.
Wow … amazing stats! It is almost overwhelming. I liked the line ‘Smart phones will put social in our hands’ although it should say ‘has put’. You have to manage the time you spend on social media. I should probably spend more time updating and engaging however the time I do spend is scheduled. The smart phone makes this time management a little bit more challenging. It’s soooo easy to respond to every tweet, like, comment and update the minute they arrive on your phone. It’s a balancing act. So far I’ve managed to avoid becoming completely addicted! With effort.
Thanks for sharing the video Deb.

Hi Theresa,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting again. You are tops in my book!
True, it should say HAS put… like we don’t have enough stuff to distract and overwhelm us. LOL. Well put. Glad your efforts are paying off so you’re not totally addicted! I’m doing pretty well with that myself. I don’t even have a cell phone let alone a smart phone. (But Dan does.)
Hey Deb,
Great video. Thanks for sharing. It always blows my mind how much information is being shared through social media these days. The reach you can get with just one message is almost unbelievable. It is here to stay and will only get better with age.
Keep your dreams alive my friend.
Make it a great day!
God Bless,

Hey Edward! It’s always a pleasure to have you visit my blog and leave a comment.
It is amazing, isn’t it, how much we put out there in social media and the not so subtle power it holds.
Btw, I’m looking forward to scheduling (and doing) that “Share Your Dream Friday” post with you. I’ll be in touch.
Hi Deb
That was one professional video.
The figures are beyond my comprehension, so why don’t I feel that I’m losing out by not twittering or joining Facebook?
Dunno but I can’t get worked up about social media.
A website or a blog: yes, but social media.

I’m really curious, just how much would sales go up for an online store if i get into social media promoting? Is it worth the time or the money invested (in case i hire someone to do it)? Because it looks like a lot of work from your article.
I barely have time to go to the gym everyday, i’m afraid of what’s gonna happen if i get addicted to “being socially active”

I struggle too with the overwhelming volume of messages that come through FB and Twitter. One way I have minimized that is to categorize my friends into “lists”. It’s a great way to zero in on a much smaller, more targeted audience, and get to know them before expanding.

Hi Deb,
Can I just say your ‘sleazy marketing tactics’ line made my morning? I have been a marketer for 20 years so I understand the importance of telling people about my products but I’m personally delighted at the tools that give me the ability to shut marketers out. From DVRs to the social media filtering tools, I love them! I’m dumbstruck by the number of marketers who run from tactic to tactic vomiting their messages all over people. Does that work for them? If not, why are they still doing it? Thanks for the reminder that providing value should be the core thought, not an afterthought. Have a great day! Allegra

I am quite new to the world of social media so that video hit home to me what I had been missing out on.
The bit I have never quite figured out though, is how many of these twitter messages actually get read.
I see people with thousands of followers and following thousands of people. There are not enough hours in the day to read every one.
A figure that I would like to know is how many tweets go to, and get read by, “ordinary” people rather than internet marketers like ourselves. I am sure that they will read the ones from Lady Gaga but from us?

I totally agree with social media especially the use of facebook and twitter. These two are the most commonly used by individuals (including celebreties) to reach out other people. However, until now, not all people or businesses are taking advantage of all the benefits that these social media sites are offering.

I love using social media. I’m learning more and more about it as the days go by. My one issue is that it really takes a lot of time. Can you suggest anything to cut down on the time SM takes every day, without sacrificing the quality of interaction? I hope my question makes sense to you lol.

Deb, I like how you simplified it to these 3:
1) You can build strong profiles.
2) You can engage your audience.
3) You can increase your visibility.
It always help me to focus when it is that clear. It is also great that you do not charge people for asking questions on your blog. It helps people (me too) to get to know you and build trust with/in you.
There are so many avenues with social marketing that I think that for many people (including myself) the question is how to fit a specific strategy and systematize it so it will work in conjunction to the manual work. So my question to you is what do you do for clients that are seeking your help, meaning, do you have the same path that you set up for each client or are you creating like a game plan (and actually putting it together) for each individual?
Maybe it would be an interesting idea to write a blog about it. Describing how you take a client from one point to the next point, sort of case study. You can even write that I asked for it, that way it would be salesy
…just a thought.
Or you can just reply on this blog…

Hi Sigal,
Thanks for commenting and including such a great question! I will certainly address in an upcoming blog post as it is a bit more involved to answer it here in the comments. Really appreciate the suggestion! I can always use input on what to write about. In fact, I’ve been meaning to write a post asking readers to share with me what they’d like me to cover. After all that was my original intent with this blog, and why I named it “Ask MyWebGal.” One of my original posts talked about this but it’s been long buried in my archives. LOL.
You ROCK, GF! Thanks
Social media sites can help you engaged with your followers/customers/clients in a much decent way. Now that social media is absolutely the most popular way of communicating with other people. No wonder others can prove the effectiveness of this!
