There are two ways to make money online. You can create an income actively or passively. Or preferably, both.
I’m a web developer. I make the bulk of my income when clients hire me to take their businesses online or improve their presence.
I build websites (or make them better), maintain them, create squeeze pages and sales pages, etc., write copy, ghostwrite, design and implement Internet and Social Media Marketing campaigns and dabble in SEO.
From time to time I also coach, teach and produce products (for myself and clients).
That’s all active income. Basically, I’m trading hours for dollars.
How I make passive income is what’s more important for you because you can do it, too. Here are two ways I earn money online passively.
1. Affiliate products and services.
I make recommendations for products and services clients and potential clients would need anyway. Hosting, autoresponder services, shopping carts, premium WordPress themes, etc.
I also have other sites, which I’ll discuss below in #2, on which I include relevant product offers, such as from Clickbank and Share a Sale (etc.).
What can you offer that relates to your products or services?
2. Adsense.
Yes! This is still a great way to earn income. (Maybe not the $10K you used to hear about but easily a car payment, or even your income taxes or mortgage payments! It all depends on how many Adsense sites you want to build, the niche(s) you choose and the quality.)
I build websites for myself and put Google ads on them as well as relevant affiliate product offers(that I like). It’s true that at first I have to build the site and market it to start driving traffic to it. But the time I invest can be practically non-existent after that’s done. I have sites I haven’t touched in years (literally) that still bring in consistent dollars month after month. However, if I continued to drive traffic, I’d obviously make more money.
These sites are usually based on my personal interests, which makes creating and building them fun. I could easily finish one and start another, all in my spare time. And with WordPress, this is SO much easier!
Do you have a hobby or interest that you could build a WordPress site for and place Adsense ads on to create passive income? (I’m sure there is!)
I’m going to write a series of posts about this. I’m considering going into the exact process and show you how I’m doing with it. I’d also show you the WordPress plugin (free) that will make the process of including your ads a very simple task. Then, if you’re interested, I’ll show you how I market the site to build traffic. And, again, if you’re interested, I’ll discuss in more detail the sites that I already have and how I’m banking consistent money from them.
Are you interested?
Do you have websites that are based on generating passive income already? How’s that going? Want tips and strategies to increase your income?
If not, would you be interested in learning more about how to begin and start making passive income?
What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

I’m the exact opposite of you, MyWebGal. I absolutely hate working for clients as they get to tell you what to do. You know, I’m not a big fan of getting told what to do… nobody is!
That’s why I’ve chosen to live off my passive income. It’s growing larger and larger every single day. Got myself a new office a few months ago. Things are looking sweet.
My pro tip to anyone interested in this: start a website besides working full-time. It (most probably) will work out in the end and I’m sure you’ll love it.
As for affiliate sites, see the site I’m linking to above — it’s a perfect example of one
Deb,
Completely agree with you on your approach to income online. I do a lot of social networking services for clients online, and at the same time have a number of affiliate ads out there to bring in revenue. I do not make much, but just in May so far I made $150 from 1 hour of work on affiliate marketing. That is time very well spent!
On another note, I need to start upping my Google adsense. A friend of mine in Ireland told me that he is now making close to $1000/month on Google ads. It is easy, just takes time. Need to make some WP blogs to do this and done!

Hi Deb, I have a scuba diving blog (for telling stories about my diving and I used to do underwater camera reviews), and I had google adsense on there. I’ve had it since about 2004, and used to get ok income from the adsense ads.
I didn’t know anyone really made a decent amount of income from those ads anymore.
I used to make money from Chitika advertising also, have you heard of those? They worked great with my camera reviews because I could make sure the ad was identical to the camera I was reviewing (in most cases).
Bye for now, Julieanne

Hi Julieanne,
Actually a lot of sites are making decent money with Adsense. I read that Woot.com makes an average of $150 a day. “Bob the Builder” reported averaging $1,400 a day. SeatGuru.com reportedly makes well over $1,000 per month and his hobby site is now an income producing business because of it.
However, I don’t know how recent (or long ago) these case studies took place.
You can read them yourself here:
http://budurl.com/wd8y
(I used budurl because the URL to the Google page is very long.)
I can say that I don’t quite make $1,000 a month yet, but I can see that the potential of that much (and more) is there.
Driving traffic to your sites is key. Plus placement and appearance of the ads themselves.
Don’t give up on it!
I haven’t reached the peak of my online career but I’m happy with what I have right now. I’ve heard (and looks like this is true) that many people online are earning most with affiliate programs than google adsense. Well, except for those who really got their fame online.

Making business online is now the best and the easiest way to earn money. And, we are talking big money here. The best way to get started is to really think of what field you are inclined the most. And, that’s it! Money will eventually come to you.
