Competing websites and blogsEstimates report hundreds of millions of websites on the internet, including the more than 50 million blogs and websites powered by WordPress. It can seem overwhelming to ever try to thrive in that sea of sites.  It’s so easy to get lost among all the others. But there’s good news, too.  There are a number of steps you can take to help your website stand out, and help you build your own audience.

Be Uniquely You

This brings up an important and related way to make your website stand out. Give your content a strong “voice.” This means that it has a particular personality, tone or point of view. One way to think about it is to ask yourself “who do I want my website to appeal to?” If the answer is “everyone”, then it may be less likely to stand out from other websites.

The easiest way to give your website an original voice is to bring your own personality and point of view to the content and articles that you publish. You are unique. Let your website be unique as well.

Deliver Original Content

First, make sure your website – meaning the content on your website – is original. This doesn’t mean that you should only have a website that is about a topic that no one else has ever written about before; there’s almost certainly no way to do that. Rather, you should make sure your website contains original content.

Republishing the same old information or articles that have already appeared elsewhere won’t work. Websites that offer free articles for republication might seem like a great resource, and an easy way to build the number of pages on your website; however, if dozens or hundreds of other websites have already republished those articles, adding your website to the mix won’t help you stand out in any way.

In fact, search engines (which is where many of your visitors likely come from) usually look unfavorably on unoriginal website content, so your website might actually receive a lower ranking because it contains those articles. This is especially true where a large percentage of the content on your website can already be found on other websites.

Instead look to generate original content yourself. Or contract with a third party to have them prepare original content on your behalf. In general, it’s better to have a smaller amount of original content on your website than a larger number of unoriginal articles and pages.

Find The Right Niche for You

You can have a website that thrives by identifying topics / subjects that are under-served, or you could better serve! You can use Google’s Keyword Tool to identify keywords that people are searching for on Google.  Try to find niches that have low competition, which you can tell within the Keyword Tool.

If you are personally interested in the niche – it’s much easier to give your website a voice and help it stand out from other websites if you have a natural enthusiasm for the subject matter.

It’s a Great Start Anyway!

There are a lot more tactics and strategies than this, but these three tips can give you an edge. Of course there’s SEO, backlinking, social networking and dozens more, but just getting started in the right direction will put your site in a better “crowd” that lives above the noise. There are a lot of sites out there that never get this right. Don’t count yourself out! If you’re reading this… you’re definitely in the game to win!

Go ahead… Thrive!
