What does Rebecca Black, Justin Beiber and Yosemite Bear Vasquez… have in common?
YouTube Viral Videos!
Kevin Allocca is a professional YouTube watcher… actually he’s YouTube Trends Manager. In this very entertaining 7-minute video he talks about viral videos and how they come about.
The secret?
The unexpected. Like cats watching cats watching “cats” on YouTube!
And, as Kevin explains in this video, we don’t just enjoy now, we participate, which means we’re defining entertainment of the future.
Thanks to Mitch Joel of Twist Image / Six Pixels of Separation for bringing this TED talk to my attention… and I just had to share it with you!
Enjoy! And don’t forget to let me know what you think of the video…

I always check youtubes videos because they are very effective when it comes to marketing as well. I love viral videos like animals doing silly human things.

I love the TED videos, I stumbled upon that site a couple of years ago, I think when Thomas Friedman spoke (The World is Flat)… It is now one of my favorite sites, there’s always very insightful content there. This is a good find, I enjoyed the video – Thanks!

That is a great video. We all want our 15 minutes of fame! Why is it that the corniest stuff seems to be the most popular?

I actually watched the Yosemite Bear video a while back, and it really creeped me out.
This is what I love about the internet though (not people getting over excited about double rainbows) but how someone can make a quick video doing something random/stupid/creepy and become an internet sensation over night.
Despite how we analyse all this stuff, I still think the most random and most stupid stuff can really work.
A good example years ago was a guy who just made a video to promote his band.
In the video he was smashing 2 barbie dolls together squirting tomato sauce all over the place, screaming the name of his band over and over again.
He had the link to his bands myspace (yes it was that long ago LOL) on the video and it drove like 2 million hits to his bands page in 1-2 days.

I agree. I thought that one was weird, too. The band one sounds rather sick! Yuck! But you never know what will go viral, right?!?! Haha
Thanks for your comment and story.
The recent viral video of the militiaman in Africa Koney tells us how powerful it can be. From nobody to most hated man on planet in 1 day

Very true!
interesting I never thought about it that way, and with the way youtube is able to tell what are the most watched, it clearing is a great way to gauge where entertainment is going.

I love where entertainment is heading. Youtube is amazing because you get to search for what you want to see instead of having the television and big media companies tell you what you want to see. I am glad we are defining the future of entertainment today!

It’s nice if you watch something good on TV, you can talk about it with friends afterwards. That’s not the same with youtube. I do like watching things that aren’t broadcast in the UK on youtube.

Hi Deb
Nice post/blog, I love it TED, thanks for sharing. Thanks ya, Erni
Very interesting video. Thanks to this we now have artist like Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black LOL. I’m not a fan by the way but my daughter worships Bieber. I think it’s great the ordinary people now have a shot at fame so yeah I agree this is definitely changing the way the entertainment industry works.
I learned about TED in my grad school IT class and I’ve been hooked ever since! This video has great info about making a viral video and it makes me laugh because when I was temping for a wine company, they paid top dollar to some Hollywood production company trying to make a viral video and what a waste of money! They apparently didn’t watch this video.
I’d like to see some examples of clever, captivating viral videos that effectively promoted a website or small business while entertaining people at the same time. BTW… I guess there’s quite a few other people trying to have their video go viral– considering the 48 hours worth of video being uploaded to YouTube every minute! Yikes, that adds up! Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, though.
I was just chatting with a friend and I asked him “what on earth did we do for entertainment before Youtube?” and we both literally could not remember anything we did that was as entertaining as watching vids online all day.
Youtube is truly the future of entertainment. Kevin’s vid is all true and very funny, too.

I highly appreciate your creative video information. I totally agree with your information.Nowadays, most people spent time on YouTube for watching videos as compare to other video portals. According to me, YouTube has become an important part of social media. If we need to promote our business services then it has becoming best way. Thanks…

Reminds me of physics, where viewing a particle requires manipulating a particle in some way (e.g. using light for microscopy). It’s kind of cool to think of a youtube “watcher” being able to effect entertainment so dramatically.
A professional YouTube watcher! Wow, that’s sounds like a really cool job
YouTube has always been one of the best places to get recognized on the Net and even with the rest of the world. Creativity, matched with the elements of surprise and unexpectedness, can really catch the attention of millions of watchers. Great ideas from Kevin. Thanks for sharing.
I’m a big fan of YouTube, but what concerns me about it becoming the future hub of video entertainment is that the majority of content is short form. It feeds the short attention spans of the cyber generation that is growing up on content that is mostly served in bite-sized clips.
I wonder if one day movie theaters will have difficulty selling tickets to people who are not used to sitting for two hours to watch ONE story.
Oh that’s cool. Actually I always check Utube for new updates. And always get new information from there.
Very interesting video. Thanks to this we now have artist like Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black LOL.like it!
Yes TED video is very interesting to watch and If you don’t know what TED is, then you are missing out on a lot of life-changing content. It’s mainly an event focused on discussing a lot of topics and it involves the world’s best & most successful humans. It’s my favorite event & website.
ya YouTube has become so dominating that it determines the trend of the future entertainment. No doubt about it. It is the leading videos portal & every one uses it for social or business gains.
I love it that was a great video. The thing that I got that was the coolest part was that we are no longer just viewing but we are participating in this culture. It so cool and I love it I heard just recently called crowd sourcing and it is the way of the future.

Even people who don’t have any marketing can create a viral video. But mostly, viral videos are not intentional – they’re wacky, enough to entertain people.
For business marketing, it is indeed helpful to campaign business using Youtube. Just by the fact that it is the 2nd largest search engine next to Google is great bridge for successful business marketing.

Great post Deb. Love the TED video. YouTube really has set itself at the forefront in terms of video entertainment as well as a tool for discovering the “next big thing.” Other factors like YouTube being a platform for job applications in that potential employees post application videos, is actually phenomenal. Who would have thought we’d be at this stage right now. Mind blowing.

I only watched a bit of the video but I have it saved to watch later.
thanks!
