Twitter Followers.

I’m not impressed.

And I probably won’t follow you back!

I’m on Twitter nearly every day, off and on. I check in with my saved searches (groups) and lists, respond to my @ replies (favorite some) and see who recently followed me that I’ve yet to follow back.

I don’t use any software that follows back automatically or sends out a DM to each. I check each person’s account to see if they are “real people” and what their Twitter profile and stream looks like.

  • Do they have a picture of themselves?
  • Is there a picture of some half-dressed chick or bare chested six pack ab guy?
  • Have they included a profile description that actually says something about themselves?
  • Do they ever actually tweet anything worthwhile?
  • Are they sending @ replies or retweeting anyone?
  • Are they sending out a steady stream of link spam?
  • Do they constantly send links to “help me” add thousands of people to my list of followers?
  • Do they have tens of thousands of followers without any sign of why?

After checking those things, I decide whether to follow back or not individually.

I stumbled on this video and wanted to share it with you. It really drives home the point of how important social media is, particularly for your online success.

It got me thinking…

There are as many social media sites as there are different ways to promote your business through them. They all have unique benefits and opportunities that you should consider. But fortunately, there are several commonalities to all of them, especially when it comes to social media marketing success.

Let’s take a quick look at these similarities:

1) You can build strong profiles.

Each social media site provides an opportunity for you to describe who you are, what you do and where to find more information about your product and/or services. Your profile is often the thing that will cause a reader to take a second look at you and/or your business. Be professional while showing personality. Provide a link to your website. Correct any spelling, capitalization or grammatical errors.

2) You can engage your audience.

Social media is just that – social. Don’t be a wallflower. Engage, praise, compliment, promote fellow members, thank and be social. If you want to get noticed, you need to participate.

3) You can increase your visibility. Read More→
